Springfield model 1884 trapdoor carbine in.45 70 caliber, serial number. SPRINGFIELD 'TRAPDOOR' RIFLE - Serial number 374812,.45-70 calibre. Composite rifle: early 1873 lock plate, second style 1873 breach block, 1884. I have an 1873 Springfield trapdoor rifle, serial number 241708. The Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor was made from 1873 through 1877. The Model 1884 was made from 1885 through 1890. That gun was designed for black powder. Only black powder cartridges should be used 2. Take the gun to a reputable gunsmith to make sure it is safe to shoot. The Model 1873 'Trapdoor' Springfield was the first standard-issue breech-loading rifle adopted by the United States Army (although the Springfield Model 1866 had seen limited issue to troops along the Bozeman Trail in 1867). The gun, in both full-length and carbine versions, was widely used in subsequent battles against Native Americans. The model 1873 was the fifth variation of the Allin. Offered in very good condition is this trapdoor carbine is in.45-70 government caliber, with serial # 144298 stamped on the rear of the receiver. The carbine has overall good metal finish with all proofs still present. The serial number indicates production in 1880, unfortunately just a bit too late for Little Bighorn.

Re: 1873 Springfield Rifle Serial Number

Ditto, Dick! I researched my 4-Volume set of SRS 'SERIAL NUMBERS OF U.S. MARTIAL ARMS' and attempted to E-Mail him on Monday, 09 July - - only to get the screen message 'COULD NOT PERFORM THIS OPERATION BECAUSE THE DEFAULT MAIL CLIENT IS NOT PROPERLY INSTALLED' (I get this same message anytime I try to click on the blue underlined name of the 'posted by' individual). I resorted to the E-Mail route when my detailed 'MESSAGE' here on the DISCUSSION BOARD got wiped out (my usual problem) when I tried to post it.
Anyway, in checking the 4 Volumes I find nothing at all close (and they are all listed as either Model 1884 Service Rifles (Code '84R') or (1) Model 1884 CADET Rifle (Code '84A', that being S/N 482034). But checking the 'MODEL 1884 RIFLE PRODUCTION' chart (Page 275 in Al's BOOK II) the Serial Numbers start at a bit below 265000 and run through a bit below 502000. The switch from the 'U.S./MODEL/1873' to 'U.S./MODEL/1884' stamping on the Breech Block was made at S/N circa 367000, so with the S/N of 491977 his Block SHOULD be stamped '1884'. But there were no S/Ns anywhere close in VOLUME-3, VOLUME-4, or VOLUME-2 (the closest ones were 491614 and 492056).
Sorry, but nothing even close anough for an 'extrapolated guess' (bad term), ande definitely no 'hits'. Sorry...
PETE
